About Our Program: At Cal Spears Basketball, we offer a highly focused, year-round AAU program structured across three seasons: Fall (September–December), Spring (March–May), and Summer (July–August). We currently dedicate our coaching efforts to a single team of middle schoolers (ages 12–14), strictly capped at 12 players to ensure maximum personalized attention. Our fast-paced, intense program is designed to reinforce great habits both physically and mentally. On the court, players engage in a minimum of four hours of practice twice a week, divided into three hours of high school and college-style team practice and one hour of small-group individual skill development. To further build our players' basketball IQ, we also conduct at least one 45-minute film session per week prior to practice. As fully insured coaches who dedicate our evenings and weekends to this program, we are deeply invested in your child's development. In return, we expect a high level of commitment from our players and parents, requiring at least 80% attendance for all AAU practices, games, and film sessions, with proactive communication for any absences.

What we are about.

From Our Families

“Coach Ryan has been instrumental in the growth and development of our son, as well as the entire Cal Spears team. While he is exceptional at developing strong athletes and skilled players, what truly sets him apart is his commitment to shaping these boys into responsible, accountable, and confident young men who support one another both on and off the court.”

“What makes Coach Ryan special is that he understands the game is about far more than wins and losses. He consistently emphasizes the bigger picture — teamwork, character, resilience, discipline, and brotherhood. The culture he is building inspires these young men to believe in themselves and to stand beside one another through every challenge.”

“Cal Spears was initially challenging for my teammates and me. Coach Ryan physically and mentally prepares you to play at another level, but still makes it a safe and fun environment. Being with him for the past 2 years has motivated me to become the best player and person I can be. I am grateful to be a part of this family and under the guidance of Coach Ryan.”

“Over the past two years with the Cal Spears basketball program, we’ve watched our son grow tremendously both as an athlete and as a young man. Coach Ryan sets a phenomenal example by focusing deeply on basketball fundamentals and true player development, rather than just the win or loss. More importantly, he leverages the sport to build character and helps each player find their own identity within a remarkably supportive community. It’s rare to find an AAU team that values meaningful relationships and life lessons as much as the game itself, and we couldn't be happier with our experience.”

“Playing for Cal Spears has been an incredibly positive experience, both on and off the court. The club does a great job of supporting players’ personal growth by building confidence, discipline, leadership, and strong basketball fundamentals in a positive environment. One of the things that stands out most is the emphasis on team bonding and creating a supportive culture where players genuinely encourage and motivate one another.

“We have already seen tremendous growth in our son in such a short period of time, not only as an athlete but as a person. We are incredibly grateful to be part of the Cal Spears journey and deeply appreciate everything Coach Ryan does for these boys and their families. Thanks, Coach!”

“Coach Ryan fosters a sense of family that helps players grow together and build lasting friendships. Cal Spears is also very flexible and understanding when it comes to balancing basketball with school, family, and other commitments, which makes it a great fit for student-athletes managing busy schedules. Overall, the club creates an environment where players can develop as athletes and individuals while still maintaining balance in other areas of life.”
